Americans are the world’s top consumers of cannabis and cocaine despite punitive US drug laws, according to an international study published in the online scientific magazine PLoS Medicine.

I’m a little doubtful of the research instrument used... I’m not sure if this is conclusive...

I’d have thought that countries like India and Afghanistan (who are one the top producers for Marijuana/charas and Opium) were supposed to top the list.
as (atleast in India) you can get marijuana for free or if you have to pay then it’s usually cheap (other than Southern states)

I was reading a report that put America as the world's sixteenth happiest nation. But this is a country where over a hundred thousand people commit suicide every year and has the world's largest number of drug addicts and alcoholics. I find it strange.

Cocaine thankfully is not much of a problem where i live but , the use and trade of marijuana is a big issue and there are talks of legalizing the cannabis trade. The arguments given are that it is legal to grow and trade cannabis in some states of the US. Is it true?

It is illegal to grow or trade cannibis anywhere in these united States of America.
Oddly that this is mentioned here as Senator McCain is touring countries discussing stopping more of the grud trade.
Obama thinks he was cute to have sold crack cocaine to his classmates when he was younger. Go figure who is getting more attention from the college youth who is still experimenting with illicit drugs and unwed sex.
Cannibis is a weed that can be used as a biofuel and if so many ”serious gamer” types would stop using it as a smoke substitute, we could power our machinery with it. Same goes for cocoa leaves and Poppy flowers.

This only shows that in spite of all efforts by the US government to crack the Columbian drug cartel or the Taliban sponsored drug production in Afghanistan, its own citizens are making it difficult for them to contain domestic demand for drugs.
